Swapping your home with another tenant

Mutual exchange is when two or more tenants living in a housing association or council property swap homes.

As long as your tenancy agreement allows mutual exchange and you fit the criteria, it’s a great way to get a new home that better suits your needs.

How can I swap my home?

To get started with a mutual exchange, we recommend you sign up with the House Exchange website. It’s a helpful online tool that connects tenants looking to upsize, downsize or change location in the UK. Registration is free for Accent customers.

Once you’ve joined we’ll get a notification and review your request for approval looking at factors like:

  • how you’ve managed your tenancy with us

  • whether or not you owe us rent

  • if you have been served with a valid notice of seeking possession

Remember, just because you’ve been approved doesn’t mean you’ll automatically get a new home. There are conditions to swapping your home and everyone involved must give their approval.
